When I was growing up, a non-Christian, I happily responded to people who said “Merry Christmas” with a “Merry Christmas” back and never thought anything of it. Back then it was an expression of cheer and goodwill. Today, the right has made it into a throw down, an expression of hostility, so I don’t say it anymore.
