This question is part of the argument for existence being contingent upon perception. Bishop Berkeley, the theologian and philosopher used this argument to attempt to prove the existence of God. He said that an omnipresent omniscient God would perceive everything and therefore everything would exist. However, people are not the only beings that could perceive the sound of a tree falling. There are numerous sentient beings living in the woods as well as the tree itself that would hear or perceive it in some way. There are environmentalists who claim that trees “scream” when they are cut down and can communicate through their intertwined root systems. There are also people who believe that the Earth itself has consciousness. The more layers we pull back the more entangled and mysterious existence becomes.
